It is a known fact that most celebrity marriages don’t last but in the case of Nollywood actress Mercy Aigbe, we all thought that everything was well and her 7 years old marriage was an example for all but that is not the case. Their marriage has also crashed.
Mercy Aigbe is married to a lagos based hotelier, Lanre Gentry. Sources have confirmed that Mercy has been enduring domestic violence for a long time in her marriage but it has gotten worse of late and she can no longer bear the pain in pretence.
We learnt that the couple had a nasty fight last week that left the actress with severe injuries and she’s still receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital in Lagos.
A few hours ago, Mercy through her Instagram page hinted on domestic violence with a post that reads, “Say NO to DOMESTIC VIOLENCE”…… Only a Coward hits a woman! REAL MEN don’t HIT!’. and her husband responded with a post that reads, “Say No to the promiscuous and irresponsible women”.
Another reliable source has confirmed that Mercy’s husband has a fair skinned mistress named Opemititi who has allegedly been the one responsible for her husband’s change of attitude.
The Lagos state commissioner for women affairs and poverty alleviation has waded into the crisis raging in Mercy Aigbe‘s marriage
– Lola Akande narrated how she felt bad to see the Nollywood actress in such bad shape
– She noted that Mercy was coughing blood with bruises on her face and other parts of her body when she came crying for help
The Lagos state commissioner for women affairs and poverty alleviation, Lola Akande, has revealed how disheartening it was to see actress Mercy Aigbe’s condition when she came to her office to report what she went through in the hands of her estrange husband, Lanre Gentry .
According to Akande, “She was coughing blood from her nose and mouth and she had injury on her face which the doctor said she must have an operation. “I was so angry that I needed to see the face of the man that did this to her, and so we invited him and he came yesterday (Tuesday) to say his own side of the story to the officials in charge of domestic violence.
“But any man that can beat a woman to a pulp like that to the extent that she is still coughing blood one week after the incident needs to have his head examined.”
According to Mercy Aigbe the Lagos state government had secured a restraining order for her from any further abuse by her husband.
Lola Akande also commended the courage of Aigbe for voicing out her ordeal, and urged other women going through similar situation not to keep quiet about their ordeal.
“I must commend the courage of mercy, because what she did is what other women who are victims of domestic violence out there need to do, they don’t need to hide it except they want to die there.”
Adding her voice to the matter, Coordinator of DSVRT, Mrs. Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, said the order henceforth prevents Mr. Gentry from getting close to his wife until further notice, assuring that the government would pursue the case to a logical conclusion.
She disclosed that Gentry, who may be charged for domestic violence, is expected to appear in court in two weeks’ time to give reasons why the restraining order should not be made perpetual.
Vivour-Adeniyi said the State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode was committed to stemming the tide of domestic violence, regardless of who the victim or the offender is, saying that Aigbe is yet another victim whose case would be treated according to the law.
“We are actually working on the case with the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA), we are handling both civil and criminal. The criminal aspect of the domestic violence has been reported to the DPO of Area F and we accompanied her to the station with a view to charging the criminal aspect to court. So that is being handled.
